Medicine and Health Sciences

Exchange students medicine

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has partnerships with numerous medical schools and faculties across Europe. Although we do not offer an English programme, we have welcomed an increasing amount of medical students in the past few years through the Erasmus+ programme for study, for clinical traineeships or for a combination of both.

The information on this page will help you to prepare your exchange programme.

I want to take courses of the medicine programme (study)

General conditions

  • Bilateral agreement: a valid inter-institutional Erasmus+ agreement between your home university and the University of Antwerp or between your Faculty and ours is required.
  • Academic career: you should at least be in your third year of medical studies.
  • Language skills: you must have a good command of English, oral as well as written. Intensive Dutch language courses are strongly recommended if you wish to take courses that are taught in Dutch.
  • Duration: one semester or a full academic year.

Study programme

We do not offer an English programme. Only a handful of courses of our Bachelor and Master programme are taught in English to accommodate international students ('green courses'). Besides these courses in English, we also offer courses with facilities for exchange students ('yellow courses'). These courses are taught in Dutch, but the lecturers provide facilities in English (e.g. study material, handbook, exam, …).

Have a look at the curriculum for exchange students. Read the guidelines carefully and use this curriculum to draft your study programme.

All general information regarding the application procedure for exchange students is available on the webpages of our International Relations Office.

We have included here a simplified scheme of the application procedure (pdf – 108 kB) for incoming medical students who wish to take courses as part of the Erasmus Study programme.

Attention: As per the guidelines of the Erasmus programme, we don't accept paper or PDF versions of the Learning Agreement any more, but only work with the new Digital Learning Agreements. Find out more on how to prepare this Digital Learning Agreement.

I want to do a clinical traineeship

  • Language skills: you must have a good command of English, oral as well as written, and a thorough knowledge of medical English. English supervision can be provided, but contact with patients will be in Dutch most of the time. A basic knowledge of Dutch is therefore highly recommended.

Mobility Programme

  • Erasmus Student Mobility for Studies (SMS)
    • a valid inter-institutional Erasmus+ agreement between your home university and the University of Antwerp, or between your Faculty and ours is required.

  • Erasmus Student Mobility for Placement (SMP)
    • We do accept students from non-partner universities, but priority is always given to students from Erasmus+ partners.
    • ≥ 2 months and maximum 3 months.

Due to limited amount of clinical traineeship positions we only process applications within the Erasmus programme. Applications of 'free movers' will not be processed

Note that you will not be able to start your traineeship if you have not had your medical screening.

I want to combine courses with a clinical traineeship

If you want to do a clinical traineeship in combination with your study programme, please contact our Internationalisation Officer well in advance and do not contact the hospital directly. When planning your study programme remember that traineeships are full-time (ca. 40 hours/week) and thus not compatible with theoretical courses (this includes Dutch courses as well). Only when there is a gap in your study programme you are allowed to do a traineeship.

The combination of courses and a traineeship is only possible when you come via the Erasmus Student Mobility for Studies (SMS) programme. This means that there is a valid bilateral Erasmus+ agreement between your university and the UAntwerp and that you stay for minimum one semester.

There is only one deadline for applications for clinical traineeships and that is 15 May.
