SAMENVATTING: Wat drijft creatieve medische studenten en onderzoekende kunstenaars om de handen in elkaar te slaan? En versmelten in deze interdisciplinaire projecten de grenzen tussen kunst en wetenschap? Sinds 2010 focust het Antwerpse onderzoekplatform BIOMAB (Biological and Medical Art in Belgium) zich op de interactie tussen anatomie, heelkunde en kunst en brengt zo studenten in de geneeskunde en de kunsten samen. Het interessante van deze masterproef is dat ze niet alleen informatie wenst te geven over integratie van kunsttechnieken in de opleiding tot arts, maar doet nadenken over menselijke creativiteit in de wetenschappen. Dit onderzoek is net als kunsthistorisch onderzoek kwalitatief onderzoek, waarbij conclusies worden getrokken op basis van kritische analyse van het onderzoeksmateriaal. Geraadpleegde bronnen bestaan uit wetenschappelijke teksten en worden gecombineerd met interviews en visuele analyses.

Let's dance! The effects of music & dance on the health of patients with sickle cell disease: a systematic review

SAMENVATTING: Sikkelcelziekte is een erfelijke ziekte van de rode bloedcellen. Mensen met sikkelcelziekte willen hun dromen realiseren, net als iedereen. Ambities zijn er genoeg, maar door vermoeidheid, veelvuldige pijncrises en regelmatige ziekenhuisbezoeken kost het hun heel wat moeite om de school of opleiding af te maken of een job uit te oefenen. Sporten en bewegen verbeteren de algemene gezondheid, maar hardlopen, wielrennen en zwemmen zijn dikwijls tegenaangewezen bij sikkelcelziekte. We zullen onderzoeken of andere vormen van fysieke beweging, dans en muziektherapieën de gezondheid van patiënten met sikkelcelziekte kunnen verbeteren. Het doel van deze systematische review is om de huidige literatuur te doorzoeken en na te gaan wat de effecten van fysieke beweging, dans en muziek zijn op hun gezondheid. In de hierop volgende experimentele studie zal er gefocust worden op het effect van muziek en dans op pijn en angst, tijdens cognitieve taken en zich begrepen en verbonden voelen met anderen.

Performance, Medicine and the Human
SUMMARY: Performance, Medicine and the Human surveys an emerging field, providing case studies based on the author's own experience of devising medical performances in collaboration with cancer patients, biomedical scientists and healthcare educators. Examining contemporary medical performance reveals an ancient preoccupation, evident in the practices of both theatre and healing, with the human. Like medicine, theatre puts the human on display in order to understand and, perhaps, alleviate the suffering inherent to the human condition. Medical practice constitutes a sort of theatre in which doctors, nurses and patients perform their humaneness and humanity. This insight has much to offer at a time when established notions of the human are being radically rethought, partly in response to emerging biomedical knowledge. Performance, Medicine and the Human argues that contemporary medical performance can shed new light on what it means to be human – and what we mean by the human, the humane, humanism and the humanities – at a time when these notions are being fundamentally rethought. Its insights are relevant to scholars in performance studies, the medical humanities, healthcare education and beyond.
