Content

This seminar is primarily meant for PhD-students who have only just started with their research.

The UAntwerp library will give an introductory overview of the various resources the library offers (catalogue, databases, electronic journals, e-books, Discovery Service).

Possible search strategies, advanced search options and an advanced use of the functionalities of databases for Exact Sciences are dealt with. It is however not possible to discuss all major databases in these disciplines.

Request to have specific databases addressed in this seminar, are more than welcome! Send in advance to helpdesk@library.uantwerpen.be.

Web of Science is used to dive into citations. Metrics like impact factors, h-index, citation context data, … are looked upon thoroughly. In this context of interpreting metrics, Google Scholar is briefly mentioned.

Along the way workflow issues like organizing yourself via personal accounts, setting up (citation)alerts, using rss feeds and using export functionalities are also discussed. Reference management software is touched upon, but the seminar is not designed as a course to learn how to work with this software.

This is a hands on session with lots of exercises! Feel free to bring your research with you so you can apply the information/exercises immediately to your own work.
