Internationally recognized cancer research at the Center for Oncological Research
In the Center for Oncological Research (CORE) of the University of Antwerp we are performing pioneering top research to investigate new cancer treatments of urgent need. Special focus is given to innovative immunotherapeutic and targeted therapies.
Our immune system is capable of destroying cancer cells. If this protection mechanism fails, we can get cancer. Through applying immunotherapy, we give the immune system the necessary weapons to win the battle with the cancer cells. Researchers expect that in the near future this therapy will be part of the standard treatment for different cancer types, because of its impressive results so far. Meanwhile immunotherapy is already being used and refunded to treat certain cancer patients.
With our research we want to make immunotherapy available to more patients. We are developing and investigating this form of therapy for different cancer types, including colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, asbestos cancer and brain tumors.
In the past decade cancer treatment has clearly evolved, with an important advance of new, targeted drugs which especially attack cancer cells and save normal cells. Targeted therapies are focusing directly on genes or proteins which contribute to the development of cancer. These drugs are mostly given together with other forms of cancer therapy.
In our research group we pay great attention to further optimization of these combination therapies. We are also studying the effect of reduced oxygen tension (i.e. hypoxia, a phenomenon that frequently appears in tumors) on these cancer treatments. Common types of cancer we are studying include lung cancer, colon cancer and head and neck tumors.
You will find more information about the new therapies that are being developed in the Center for Oncological Research in Prof. Filip Lardon’s book:

To speed up and boost our research on developing novel cancer therapies, we need extra funds. Your personal support can be crucial. Do you want to support our cancer research financially? This can be done today with a gift. Do you want to get more information or discuss other possibilities of support, please do not hesitate to contact us.
