Master class: How sound are banks today? (Watch on YouTube)
By Prof Mathias Dewatripont, Université Libre de Bruxelles

In this master class, Prof Mathias Dewatripont introduced the audience to the economic principles behind the prudential regulation of banks within the context of the European Banking Union. In particular, he discussed:

  • the extent to which regulation has been corrected since 2008, in terms of liquidity, solvency, and resolution;
  • the potential severity of overcapacity in banking, in Belgium as well as in Europe, given existing technological opportunities
  • whether EU-wide banks represent a solution allowing for more risk diversification or instead a danger that will exacerbate the Too-Big-To-Fail syndrome.

Panel discussion

  • Prof Mathias Dewatripont,  Université Libre de Bruxelles
  • Tom Dechaene, Director of the National Bank of Belgium
  • Prof Lucrezia Reichlin, Professor of Economics at London Business School
  • Prof Herman Daems, Chairman of the Board BNP Paribas Fortis

  • Prof Jan Bouckaert, University of Antwerp
