Moving from Multi-Disciplinary Research to an Interdisciplinary Mindset (IOB PhD Training Day)

“Moving from Multi-Disciplinary Research to an Interdisciplinary Mindset” for young researchers and their supervisors to strengthen their skills in interdisciplinary research.

Researchers are more and more encouraged to combine multiple mental models throughout their research and therefore have to make the implicit epistemological and ontological underpinnings of their research explicit.

Another challenge lies in the fact that interdisciplinary research often remains bounded to the different fields of social sciences despite the discussion of similar sustainability puzzles in both natural- and social science communities.

It is our ambition to contribute to a more nurturing institutional environment for interdisciplinary work where junior researchers get the time and space to negotiate, reflect and define the integration of multiple mental models throughout their research.

The domain-specific training “Moving from Multi-Disciplinary Research to an Interdisciplinary Mindset” consists of :

  1. a lecture by Prof. Dr. Catherine Lyall on research strategies in interdisciplinary work
  2. a hands-on workshops hosted by Prof. Dr. Elizabeth Oughton to guide junior scholars in framing the interdisciplinary character of their research and operationalizing interdisciplinarity throughout their research process
  3. the last session brings together the lessons-learned throughout the day and the individual research projects of the participants. This session is organized by IOB but invites the guest-lecturers to actively participate and share experiences.
