Reflections by a former president of the Constitutional Court of Burundi and of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights

Prof. Dr. Gerard Niyungeko (Faculty of Law, Université du Burundi) was the chair of the commission that drafted the multi-party Constitution of Burundi (adopted in 1992) and the first president of the Burundi Constitutional Court. A professor in international and human rights law at the Université du Burundi, he was elected as judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in 2006 and served as its first President. In 2019, he was appointed as alternate sanctions commissioner at the African Development Bank.
