Ornithology Prize Wim Dings 'De Wielewaal'

Starting in 2015, the University of Antwerp will award an ornithology prize in memory of ornithologist Wim Dings (1927-2012). Wim Dings was an enthusiastic field ornithologist and active member of the former society 'De Wielewaal', now part of Natuurpunt. The goal of the prize is to support scientific field ornithology in Belgium by providing financial support and visibility to either academic or advanced non-academic scientific research in the field of avian biology. The prize is awarded every second year by a jury of internal and external experts, and will be worth 2000€ in 2015. The candidate will be invited to present his/her results at the annual symposium for field ornithology ('Vogeldag') or a similar forum.

How to participate?
The prize will be awarded for a thesis (Master or PhD) or paper of at least 3000 words, including a Dutch and English summary, and a short biography (one page). Documents are submitted in Word or PDF format to Prof Erik Matthysen, Departement Biologie, Universiteit Antwerpen (erik.matthysen@uantwerpen.be), at the latest on 1 October 2014.

The prize is awarded to individual candidates, rather than teams. Preference is given to young researchers (pre-doctoral or at most 2 years post-doctoral) and/or non-academic ornithologists with research of high scientific quality.

If you want to support this prize, you can make a donation  by bank transfer, using account number 735-0079976-36 (in the name of Universiteit Antwerpen, Prinsstraat 13) with Prize Wim Dings as notification.

You can make a one-off payment or set up a standing order with your bank. If your donation exceeds €40 per year, it is tax deductible and you will receive a certificate from the University of Antwerp.

Prof. Bob Colebunders (UAntwerpen) tests hypothesis in the battle against nodding disease

The nodding disease leads to epileptic seizures among children and disrupted regions in South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
Professor Colebunders has been recently discovered that the black fly probably caused the disease. By destroying the black fly, the disease seems to disappear in Uganda. If we can confirm this assumption, the nodding disease can be treated.
VLIR-UOS is funding exploratory research of professors Geert Haesaert (Ghent University), Bob Colebunders (University of Antwerp) and Emilio Ovuga (Gulu University) for the cause of nodding within the South Initiatives program. The first hypothesis focused on the influence of mycotoxins, a sort of fungi in the diet. To examine the new piste of the black fly, there are additional resources needed.
