Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) is a university centre for top-level, patient-friendly tertiary care, high-quality academic training and groundbreaking scientific research with an important international dimension.

Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) opened its doors in 1979.

Plans for the new university hospital had been drawn up in 1971 when the Faculty of Medicine was being founded at what was then the UIA (Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen).

The hospital was co-founded with the Province of Antwerp as a neutral, pluralistic hospital. It became an independent hospital on 1 January 2005. Antwerp University Hospital plays a crucial role in training medical students from the University of Antwerp.

The hospital has 573 beds in 27 wards. In 2011, more than 26,000 patients spent the night here. There are 38 highly specialised units, visited by a total of more than half a million patients on an annual basis. Antwerp University Hospital employs approximately 2,800 people, including 400 doctors and 1,400 nurses.
