C-MAT, the Centre for Maritime & Air Transport Management, is a centre of the Faculty of Applied Economics at the University of Antwerp, one of the largest universities in Belgium, which carries out high-level academic research in the field of transport and maritime economics. C-MAT draws on decades of experience in both transportation research and the educational programmes offered by the Faculty of Applied Economics at the University of Antwerp. The academic staff members undertake original research in the fields of transport, maritime and air transport economics, management and logistics.
Contributions from the private sector are crucial in enhancing students’ experience and in-depth knowledge of both the maritime and air transportation industries. The maritime and air transport track allows students to focus on a particular field, while the economics track aims at improving students’ research skills and competences. C-MAT lecturers, course content, case studies and field trips are chosen in close cooperation with leading industry actors.
The port of Antwerp is Europe's second largest port and home to world-leading cargo handlers. C-MAT has a privileged working relationship with companies that have contributed to the growth of the port of Antwerp. Upon joining C-MAT, students are taken to the very core of the port's and individual companies' success by the captains of industry who helped to ensure it. In this way, students are offered not only strong academic programmes, but also industry experience and know-how.
Furthermore, C-MAT is centrally located within reach of the four busiest airports in Europe: London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. This allows C-MAT to work together with numerous actors from the air transport industry including airlines, airports and government entities. But Belgium itself also offers a variety of interesting partners and case studies, such as Brussels Airlines, Brussels Airport, Charleroi Airport, Liège Airport and Antwerp Airport, where students can obtain valuable insights.
Last but not least, a truly international experience is offered by C-MAT’s student population and by the city of Antwerp itself.
