Antwerp port and city

Port of Antwerp

The port of Antwerp is the second largest port in Europe and is home to international enterprises, a wide array of international logistics groups and several hundred freight forwarders.

Antwerp is a port of call in the liner schedules of all leading shipping lines and alliances. Some of the world’s largest docks and locks can be found here; testifying to the city’s engineering excellence. It is said that the city of Antwerp is a mere by-product of the maritime and transportation industry, and indeed the port itself is truly a city in its own right.

Container shipping, break bulk and special cargo are found alongside the single most important chemical cluster in the world, providing industry experience and know-how.

Following its unparalleled growth in the 16th century, relative decline and renewed expansion, the port’s impressive record continues to this very day. In recent years, it has reached and surpassed its pre-crisis volume and firmly reasserted its position as a world port.

City of Antwerp

The city of Antwerp – the birthplace of the port – has a rich history stretching back centuries and encompassing architecture, music and artistic and decorative crafts, all within a stone’s throw of C-MAT.

The city’s streets stir with memories of great artists and scientists such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, Breughel, Plantijn, Erasmus and many others.

Antwerp is also home to innumerable pubs, each with its own character, wonderfully sophisticated restaurants, typical street cafés and busy shopping streets. Antwerp’s nightlife and wide assortments of beers are well known internationally.

The city has art, science, culture and economics all rolled into one. It is located in one of the best value-for-money areas in north-western Europe, with general living costs, including accommodation, proving extremely reasonable. Getting to major European cities such as Paris, London, Brussels, Cologne and Amsterdam is fast and easy. Since it is an important port city and transportation hub, Antwerp is easily accessible by coach, high-speed train and plane.
