Addressing climate change: from despair to hope (overview lecture)

During this opening session, Prof. Emeritus Aviel Verbruggen will introduce the most pressing current climate change challenges and potential pathways for climate change action. Applying a systemic perspective to the link between climate change and sustainable development, he will thereby introduce and critically reflect upon several topics that will be discussed in the debating series.


Aviel Verbruggen is Prof. emeritus at the UAntwerp. His research is multi-disciplinary (technology-economics-politics) on environmental & energy topics, such as: electricity, nuclear power, cogeneration, renewable energy support systems, emission trading, policy planning. From 1998 to 2014, he contributed to most reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He is still teaching at the UA’s postgraduate course ‘Energy & Climate’. Tine Hens is a historian, journalist at MO* Magazine and author of the book ‘Het Kleine Verzet’(Epo, 2015). She is specialized on climate change, socio-ecological transition and resilience.
