First International workshop on onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy

From 12-14 October 2017 the first international workshop on onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE) was held in Antwerp.

OAE, of which Nodding syndrome is considered to be one of the clinical presentations, constitutes a serious public health problem in remote rural areas in Africa and has severe socio-economic consequences for entire communities.

This conference brought together researchers and organisations involved in onchocerciasis control and research and those involved in the treatment and research of epilepsy. The ultimate goal was to create an OAE alliance to stop children from developing OAE and to decrease the suffering caused by this lingering disease.
