Learning outcomes

Compentence area 1: Expert youth health care

1. Thorough knowledge and advanced insight in the concepts of health and disease, health promotion and disease prevention, focused on infants, children and adolescents, and acting accordingly

2. Thorough knowledge and advanced insight, at group and individual level, in the growth, the development, the health behavior and the health condition (physical, psychological and social) of infants, children and adolescents and of their influencing factors and acting accordingly

3. Identifying risk and protective factors with regard to growth, development, health and health behavior and evaluating its relative importance in providing preventative and accompanying measures both at group and individual level

4. Advanced insight in the concepts of normality and normal range of variation with regard to health, growth and development

5. Programmatically perfoming health monitoring, early detection and screening of infants, children and adolescents in line with the conventional scientific insights and strategies

6. In close collaboration with other disciplines, evaluating the health (physical, psychological and social) and development of infants, children and adolescents and drawing up a follow-up plan and referring to other care workers if needed

7. Thorough knowledge of the Flemish vaccination recommendations and recommendations for the prophylaxis of infectious diseases and implementing these for the target group in collaboration with other care workers

8. Giving urgent assistance in life threatening situations and applying the applicable resuscitation techniques

9. Advanced insight in the influence of the environment (family, reception, school, ...) on the health of children and adolescents, now and in the future (longitudinal), and acting accordingly

10. In collaboration with other care workers, making an analysis of the environmental risks and contributing to a healthy living environment (home, reception conditions, school) of infants, children and adolescents

11. Thorough knowledge of the impact of physical, psychological and social impairments on the learning and education participation of children and adolescents, now and in the future (longitudinal)

12. Having thorough knowledge of the principles of action-oriented work and of the “International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health - Child and Youth” (ICF-CY), and drawing up an individualised care plan in accordance with these principles, in which the specific functional needs of children and adolescents are translated to the education context

Competence area 2: Health promotor

13. Determining priorities with regard to the promotion of health of infants, children and adolescents, both at individual and group level and taking social developments into account

14. Having thorough knowledge of the methods for health promotion of infants, children and adolescents and having the pedagogical and participatory skills to contribute to this health promotion both at individual and group level

15. Raising health needs of children and youngsters with the relevant policy makers (school management, local/regional policy) and contribute to the development of an appropriate health policy

Competence area 3: (medical) leader

16. Advanced insight in the organisation, the structure and the range of (preventative) health care, welfare and the education for infants, children and adolescents, at local and regional level, and of partner organisations which contribute to the realisation of the health policy for these age groups

17. Fulfilling a co-ordinating role in the preventative care for infants, children and adolescents, in close consultation with parents, carers/teachers and other care workers

18. Thorough knowledge and advanced insight in management methods of preventative services for infants, children and adolescents, and applying these methods in leading a team within these services

19. Advanced insight in implementation strategies with regard to preventative health policy for infants, children and adolescents and applying these

20. Thorough knowledge and advanced insight in the principles of quality assurance and applying the customary quality standards to the policy of preventative health care within the service as well as developing and implementing quality enhancing measures

21. Adequate personal functioning within the organisation, among which time management and safeguarding the balance between work and personal development

Competence area 4: Communicator

22. Communicating with children, adolescents and their parents with a view to tailored health promotion, both at individual and population level

23. Motivating and affirming children, adolescents and their parents in making healthy choices

24. Communicating with children, adolescents and their parents with a view to a timely identification of care needs and outlining a preventative care path in consultation with them

25. Efficiently and effectively exchanging information and communicating within their own multidisciplinary setting and with other actors of the health, welfare and education sector in view of an adequate health policy for infants, children and youngsters, both at individual and group level

Competence area 5: Collaborator

26. Multidisciplinary collaboration with the relevant local and regional actors in the health, care/education and welfare sector, with a view to realising the preventative health policy and the integral youth care as described in Flemish legislation and regulations

Competence area 6: Professional

27. Thorough knowledge of the current medico-ethical, legal and deontological standards and acting accordingly, more specifically those relating to collective preventative actions, the legal status of children, youngsters and their environment

28. Taking on a non-discriminating attitude in contacts with children, adolescents and their environment, with respect for ethnic and cultural diversity and different religions, and ensuring equal access to care for all children and youngsters

Competence area 7: Scientist

29. Taking on a positive attitude towards independent and lifelong learning

30. Collecting scientific information with regard to youth health care and evaluating it critically

31. Recognizing and critically analyzing ethical dilemmas in research and formulating a coherent and well-founded answer to them; applying the rules on scientific integrity in one's research

32. Advanced insight in the various health monitoring systems in general and in particular those relevant for infants, children and adolescents and critically evaluating their data results

33. Summarizing a problem within youth health care in a scientific question and developing it in accordance with the standard scientific criteria, using one's own data and/or data collected by others

34. Translating scientific results from the research domain to the target group and using them for personal actions and those of the organisation
