The University of Antwerp wishes to provide excellent academic education at Bachelor, Master and PhD level to students from all social groups and of all generations.
Our university is an academic community of students, lecturers and researchers in which we help each other acquire new scientific insights and develop skills. In this way, we enhance our own learning and are able to contribute to the well-being of our society. We call this academic training.
Education interwoven with research
Excellent academic education is closely connected with scientific research. Students acquire knowledge about research results during lectures, through course materials and/or digital media. They gain a better insight by discussing research findings with each other and by writing papers about them. They become proficient in different research methods and also learn to conduct their own research.
The education we provide emphasises the development of competences. In addition to knowledge and insight, these competences will also include particular skills and attitudes. Thanks to competence-oriented education, our academic graduates are able to function successfully in professional environments.
We start from the idea that all students want to learn and to educate themselves. Our educational programmes are designed to support and activate this desire. Studying means taking responsibility and making a commitment, but it is also a social process: you learn from others, both lecturers and classmates.
Every student counts
The education we provide recognises and respects individual talent and personal characteristics; social, cultural and religious backgrounds; previously acquired competences; and personal projects for the future. As a result, it is the student that lies at the heart of our educational processes.
Our educational programmes aim to provide students with maximum opportunity for building up international learning experiences. Internationalisation of education stimulates the development of competences in communication, collaboration, creativity and problem solving. These competences are essential for being able to function properly in a society that is becoming increasingly global.
