About the Department of Biology

Research within the Department of Biology covers an extremely broad area of biology, focusing on all organizational levels, ranging from what occurs inside a living cell, the functioning of organisms and populations to the study of communities and entire ecosystems.

Research within the Department is of a high quality. In addition, several of the Department’s researchers belong to the international top within their field. The department’s strength lies in the field of ecology. The behavioural research is unique in Flanders.

Students are introduced to research via project work during the bachelor course and then they have the opportunity to actively participate in a master thesis.  A doctoral programme is available for those who wish to develop further as researchers. The Department also attracts students from other universities, including foreign universities.
