27/03/2024 - Open position - Full-time postdoctoral scholarship in the field of physics or chemistry – electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

Full-time postdoctoral scholarship position open in the field of physics or chemistry – electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

The University of Antwerp is looking for a motivated PhD holder in the field of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Physics. You will conduct research in the framework of a multi-disciplinary project OPTRIBITS.  The project focuses on trityl-based molecular qubits and their hybrids with single-wall carbon nanotubes. Your role within the project will be the synthesis of these hybrids and their advanced spectroscopic analysis with a combination of magnetic resonance and optical spectroscopy.

We offer a full-time appointment as a postdoctoral scholarship holder for a period of 2 years; possibly extended with 1 additional year.  The planned start date is 1 July 2024.

You can apply for this vacancy via this link up to and including 01/05/2024.

09/11/2023 - New publication - ORSY: "The synthesis of levulinic acids from muconic acids in hot water" by Céderic Ver Elst, Robby Vroemans, Mathias Bal, Sergey Sergeyev, Carl Mensch and Bert Maes in Angewandte Chemie

We are excited to share the latest publication on the synthesis of levulinic acids from muconic acids in hot water. An exciting result from the Maes group of the research division Organic Synthesis (ORSY). This work was selected as inside cover for the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

You can also read about this invention in an interview prof. Maes gave to C2W | Mens & Molecule.

26/10/2023 - PhD-defence Gilles De Smet on 26th of October 2023

Gilles De Smet will defend his PhD on the 26th of October at 5 PM. Valorization of lignin, part of lignocellulose biomass, as feedstock for the production of chemicals as an alternative to the current fossil resources based approach requires novel chemical transformations of lignin monomers. The work presented in this thesis focused on selective hydrodeoxygenation which allows a controlled decrease in oxygen content giving access to biobased commodity chemicals.

06/10/2023 - The board of trustees of The Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) has announced the new fellowships fundamental and strategic basic research. For the Chemistry Department Thijs De Vos, Léon Luntadila Lufungula and Robine Cleirbaut were selected. Congratulations!

Thijs has started his PhD within the research group Organic Synthesis (ORSY) where he is conducting research towards developing new methods for the synthesis of organofluorides. Léon is currently a PhD student with the research group Structural Chemistry (STRUCCHEM). His project is concerned with studying the structure and interactions in surface-modified titania, whereby bi-functional phosphonates are grafted on the surface and the application of these hybrid materials as metal scavengers. Robine is currently conducting a PhD study in which she performs research on the immobilisation of dye decolorizing peroxidase on titania materials, with the final goal being the development of biosensors for the detection of harmfull waste, such as phenols. She is conducting this study in the research group Theory and Spectroscopy of Molecules and Materials (TSM²). We wish them all good luck, curiosity and fascinating discoveries in their research.
