New ebooks from Bloomsbury

Since the beginning of this year we have access to two new ebook packages at Bloomsbury: Cultural History and Open Collections.

The Cultural History package includes 317 ebooks about global cultural history, ranging from antiquity to the present. This package was purchased by the history department. You can specifically search the collection at https://www.bloomsburyculturalhistory.com/home.

The Open Collections package is a Subscribe to Open package. This means that, with the support of the Institute of Development Policy, Bloomsbury will make 20 ebooks available in Open Access in 2024. We also have access to 194 additional titles within African Studies and Development.

Books from both packages are included in our catalog (https://anet.uantwerpen.be/desktop/uantwerpen/opacuantwerpen)

Workshop Open Data and Research Assessment - 21st of February 2024 09:00-13:00 - S.C.002 (CST)

The requirement of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data is an important aspect of current project proposals. But what does opening up your data yield for the individual researcher? And how can we better value researchers for making their data open (where allowed)?

In this workshop organized by the Open Science Committee of our university, researchers from various disciplines provide insights into how they strive to make their data open and the advantages and disadvantages they experience. RIVA provides an overview of the policy of the University of Antwerp, and Nick Schryvers explains the conclusions on open data from the Open Science Research Assessment (OSRA) project group of the Federal Open Science Board (FOSB).

The following speakers have already confirmed (this list may be expanded):

  • Jonas Lefevere (Dept. Political Science)
  • Johan Verbeeck (Dept. Physics)
  • Winnok Devos (Dept. Biomedical Science)
  • Tine van Daal (Dept. OOW)
  • Kris Laukens (Dept. Computer Science)
  • Pieter Spooren (RIVA)
  • Nick Schryvers (Dept. Physics, chair project group OSRA FOSB)

Until September 30 you could find the journals and books of Intersentia, Die Keure and Anthemis on the Jurisquare platform. Jurisquare is being discontinued however and therefor the faculty of Law has taken on a new subscription to LexNow. To keep track of all the changes, you can find an quick overview of the Belgian law databases below:

  • For these publishers we have access to the full texts of all journals and books on Stradalex. This is not the case for the other publishers on the platform.

  • Books that are less than 3 years old also do not have any print or download options on campus.

Jura

Oxford English Dictionary moved to a new platform

On 18 July, Oxford English Dictionary moved to a new platform and was simultaneously provided with a new interface. The new platform provides a clearer form of navigation and the new tabular layout, in line with current accessibility standards (WCAG), makes information easier to digest and understand. The new interface has the familiar look of the Oxford Academic Platform, giving users a better experience when switching between websites.

Content, searches and display preferences that were stored in personal profiles on the old platform are no longer available. If you created a personal profile on the old website, you now need to create a new account on the new website. However, the various functionalities will remain available.

You can still view OED's new interface and functionalities via the same familiar URL: https://www.oed.com/

Access monKEY via SSO

After switching to a new platform the fiscal database monKEY is now accessed via Single Sign On (SSO). To gain access, click on "Studenten & Academisch personeel via Belnet", choose the right institution and enter your UAntwerp login.

The SSO access has the advantage of providing you with a personalised interface that you can adjust to your liking. To learn all about the new interface you can use the support page.

Trial access Scite.ai

Until April 14 2023 there is trial access to Scite.ai.

Scite.ai is a database that provides more insight into citations. On their website the database is described as follows: 'scite is an platform for discovering and evaluating scientific articles via Smart Citations. Smart Citations allow users to see how a publication has been cited by providing the context of the citation and a classification describing whether it provides supporting or contrasting evidence for the cited claim'.

Access the database directly from scite.ai. Off campus access is possible with VPN.

An expert talk that provides more background and information on this application will be held in Zoom on Thursday March 23 at 11h. The participation link can be found here.

Free Open Access publishing at John Benjamins

More information can be found on the page Open Access deals with publishers.

Online training Ovid Medline en Evidence Based Medicine Reviews - new date!

On Monday December 12th you can join a live training session on the databases Medline en Evidence Based Medicine Reviews on the Ovid platform. The session is scheduled from 11:00 until 12:30 and will be in English.

Please register beforehand by sending an email to the library's helpdesk. You can join the session via this link. A recording will be available on Mediasite afterwards.

Medline is one of the most important (bio)medical databases. Its content is almost the same as the database PubMed but the Ovid platform offers some important search options and tools that PubMed doesn't have. Evidence Based Medicine Reviews is the name of the Cochrane database on the Ovid platform.

BelgaPress replaces GoPress - reminder

From 31/12 onwards there will no longer be access to GoPress.

Take the time to familiarize yourself with BelgaPress. Instruction videos are available on the BelgaPress training website.

SciFinder-n now the default interface

After 30/12 you can no longer access to the old SciFinder environment. Switch to the new platform as soon as possible if you haven't done so already!

Access SciFindern with the same account you used for SciFinder. Saved data (alerts, etc.) can be transferred from SciFinder to SciFindern. Go to migrate from CAS SciFinder to CAS SciFindern and follow the instructions.

Need help? A tutorial is available on MediaSite and CAS has a training website SciFindern.

Database Communication Source

Since July the University of Antwerp has access to Ebsco's Communication Source. This database contains the Communication Abstracts and Communication & Mass Media Complete databases. This means that all full text of CMMC and the communication thesaurus are also available in Communication Source. In addition, the full text of some extra 150 journals is available in Communication Source.

From 1/10/2022 there will no longer be access to Communication Abstracts and Communication & Mass Media Complete. Only Communication Source will then be available.

New interface Discovery Service

The Discovery Service has a new look. The most important difference for users is that all full text access options are grouped under one button. This means that clicking through to the catalogue, making an ILL request, checking for full text access, ... all go via this one button.

Searching itself remains unchanged, but help with the search has been expanded with a concept map that visually maps terminology and connections between terms. In addition, the possibilities via a personal account have been extended. Also new is that it is now possible to chat with the library directly from the Discovery Service.

Additional small developments are expected in the coming months and we can also fine-tune a few things, mainly in wording, look and feel. In the current planning there will be a definitive switch from the old to the new interface by the end of September!

You can access the Discovery Service via the overview of databases or directly via the search box (widget) integrated on the library's start page.

Questions or comments can be sent to the library helpdesk.

Tutorials on Mediasite

Need help with the online resources available via the library? Take a look at the Mediasite-page of the library. The short tutorials and recordings of webinars might be a big help!

In the category Learning Line Information Literacy you can find recordings of the open course sessions that we regularly organize on general topics such as locating documents, advanced searching, bibliographical software...

The other categories contain shorter tutorials per target audience / course.

Publish Open Access with Cambridge University Press without cost

Thanks to our 3-year, transformative agreement with Cambridge University Press researchers from the University of Antwerp no longer have to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) when publishing Open Access in the journals of this publisher.

More information can be found on the page Open Access deals with publishers.

New interface Web of Science (08/07/2021)

Web of Science has a new interface. From July onwards this new interface will be the default, it will still be possible to click through to the old interface for a while though. To do this, click on 'Products' at the top right and then on Web of Science (Classic). Access to the database remains unchanged: on campus automatic access and off campus access with VPN.

The new interface goes beyond a simple refresh of look and feel! Training sessions are planned in the next academic year.

The UAntwerp now has access for one year to 2 documentaries about Guatemala on the streaming platform Kanopy:

  • 500 YEARS - Life in Resistance
  • Granito: How to nail a dictator

These are currently the only two titles available to us on Kanopy, but faculties and departments can always buy more titles if interested.

Free access to online resources by KBR (18/02/2021)

The Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) offers remote access to its digital collections. The available resources represent a potentially relevant extension of the UAntwerp library resources, especially for students in the Humanities and Social Sciences. KBR purchases the electronic resources and makes them freely available to registered users through the MyKBR account. Each registered user thus has access to more than 100 databases, 5,000 e-journals and 62,000 e-books, with a focus on humanities and social sciences. Some sources are accessible only in KBR itself for legal reasons; this is indicated in the overview on their website.

Method:

(1) Register once for a MyKBR account: https://opac.kbr.be/register.aspx.

(2) Browse through the overview of available e-resources: https://www.kbr.be/nl/collecties/elektronische-bronnen/

When you click on a source, a login is requested. This is where you then log in with your KBR account.

(3) Or, you can search through the KBR's catalog: https://opac.kbr.be - in that case, don't forget to log in with your KBR account at the top right.

Extra:

An overview page of all digital sources (with links to both digitized sources and purchased online databases): https://www.kbr.be/nl/collecties/digitale-collecties-in-kbr/
