Raf Vanderstraeten is Professor of Sociology at Ghent University and director of the Center for Social Theory. In his work he focusses on the historical and sociological analysis of the systems of science, education and religion. According to research on 'pillarization', some European countries (such as Belgium and the Netherlands) are internally divided into blocs of different religious and political persuasions. Raf Vanderstraeten explains why 'religious Virtuosi' were able to fulfil such a prominent role in the Catholic pillar, and especially in Catholic education, what can result in interesting insights concerning the role of pillarization in magic lantern studies in Belgium. This event is organised in cooperation with CiASp Centre de recherche en Cinéma et Arts du Spectacle (Université libre de Bruxelles).
