Please note that there are no more scholarship opportunities for South African PhD students (only EU)
Exchange (Target Group 1 and 2)
South African students who are currently enrolled in a PhD programme either at a South African Eurosa partner university (Target Group 1) or at a South African non-partner university (Target Group 2) can apply for a PhD exchange scholarship for research at a European university. These exchange scholarships are offered in order to temporarily conduct research at one of the Eurosa partner universities in the framework of the general PhD. Interested candidates can apply for a predefined vacancy or can submit their own research proposal. There are no scholarships available for degree seeking PhD candidates.
Short term – ‘Exchange’ PhD
In order to be eligible for the exchange PhD programmes, students need to be already enrolled in a PhD programme at a South African home university. The duration of the scholarship programme varies from 6 to 22 months. Interested candidates can apply for one of the research proposals offered in the database (the list of available research topics is available in the application database) or can submit their own research proposal. Candidates who wish to submit their own proposal for research collaboration need to apply for the 'open vacancy' offered at their preferred host institution. Each application needs to be supported by an invitation letter written by the host supervisor from the European university and by a support letter from the home supervisor.
PhD scholarships holders should discuss the starting date of their mobility with their supervisor, but all selected students must start heir mobility before December 31st, 2016. All mobilities must end before July 2018.
Important: It is not allowed to split the scholarship or to temporarily put on hold the scholarship to spend part of the research period in any other country than the country of the host university. Temporarily putting the scholarship on hold is only allowed in exceptional and justified cases (e.g. illness, urgent personal reasons to return home,...).
