Prof. Dr. Charlotte De Backer

Prof. dr. Charlotte De Backer is FOOMS coordinator and Associate Professor at the University of Antwerp, Dept. of Communication Sciences. She obtained her PhD at Ghent University in 2005. She has worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California Santa Barbara (with Leda Cosmides and John Tooby), and Ghent University (with Johan Braeckman). She has worked as a   lecturer at the University of Leicester (UK), and has joined the University of Antwerp in 2010. While her PhD work (2001-2005) focuses on evolutionary approaches to gossip and social behavior, she   shifted her focus to (social) food studies in the past years. She started with some studies about the impact of how we eat (communal or not) on our social behavior. Later she added studies about the   relation between our food media consumption and its relation to food literacy, and now she also supervises studies on food marketing. She currently supervises five PhD students in the area of food   studies (and three more in the domain of social talk, celebrity studies and romantic relations), and welcomes scholars who want to join FOOMS’ team. Dr De Backer is a member of the research group MIOS. Contact her to join the Monday meetings or to add information on our website.
