Raising awareness

The University of Antwerp Global Minds programme stimulates awareness-raising activities on all campuses.

The following activities are (co-)funded with Global Minds:

Development-relevant immersion trips for Flemish students to the South

Every year, two immersion trips for University of Antwerp students are organised by USOS (Universitaire Stichting voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking). This way, our university aims to give students insight into the complexity and richness of societies in the South.

The trips are preceded by thorough preparation with information about the country and intercultural communication. During the summer, students spend a month with host families. Also, a programme, courses, excursions or internships are followed at the university in the South. Each group has a maximum of nine students and is supervised by a staff member of the University of Antwerp who travels on a voluntary basis and is part of the group.

The destination of the immersion trips varies from year to year. Registrations are made via USOS.

Research or internships by EU students in the South

Every year, the Global Minds programme makes about 38 scholarships available for EU students from the University of Antwerp who travel to the South for an internship or as part of their studies of thesis.

The grant is a lump sum of €1000. Both Bachelor (from the second year on) and Master students can apply for this scholarship. The student’s stay in the South is for at least one month (minimum 28 days) and the country of destination is on the VLIR-UOS country list:

  • Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa
  • Asia: Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Palestinian Territories, Vietnam
  • Latin America: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru, Suriname

The student can decide on the subject of the internship or research through a promoter (University of Antwerp academic) and/or through USOS (Universitaire Stichting voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking) or via this website http://www.wetenschapswinkel.be/Homepage/

The application deadlines for a travel grant are:

  • Round 1: 14 December 2018 (if the student departs to the South before June 2019)

  • Round 2: 13 May 2019 (if the student departs to the South after June 2019)

Students can apply for a travel grant through the International Relations Office from the University of Antwerp.

Debating Development

Students and staff members can debate on aspects of development issues or join in the search for answers to the global challenges of this world through participation in the Debating Development debate series. Two international speakers will discuss a topic during these debates. The Global South is given a forum in these debates.

The debates take place on Tuesday evenings, from October to the beginning of December and are open to students and staff of the University of Antwerp as well as to external audiences.

The series of debates can also be chosen by students as an optional subject (with credits).

Masterclass for Sustainable Development

The Masterclass for sustainable development is organised by USOS (Universitaire Stichting voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking), Arbeid & Milieu and Act4change and offers a weekend of courses, debates and workshops on sustainable development.

The courses are taught in English and are open to all University of Antwerp students.

Registration is possible via USOS.
