Antwerp campaign 2015

In total three campaigns were organized in Antwerp. All measurements were performed on plane tree.

The first campaign was organized to obtain information about the spatial variation in urban air quality (the background pollution). This campaign will also help to interpret the reflectance data in function of air quality. 143 plane trees were measured using Saturation Isothermal Remanent Magnetization (SIRM), a magnetic leaf biomonitoring approach. The SIRM method allows us to estimate the amount of traffic related PM on the leaves.

The second campaign was organized to map the urban air pollution using physiological and reflectance based leaf characteristics. Based on the previous SIRM campaign, 44 trees were selected for mapping purposes.

Based on the SIRM campaign and environmental factors (enough space for the boom lift), two trees in areas with contrasting air quality were selected for upscaling. This third field campaign was organized to scale up hyperspectral leaf reflectance data to canopy level. Measurements were performed at two perpendicular wind directions (east and west orientation) and at 3 different heights, so in total at six locations in the crown.
