Interuniversity Attraction Poles (IUAP)

The interuniversity poles of attraction (IUAP) constitute the last remaining form of a number of initiatives that were launched by the federal government to support fundamental research but have been seriously scaled down throughout the consecutive stages of state reform. IUAP are networks in which excellent teams that belong to Belgium’s two main communities combine expertise for a period of 5 years around a theme of fundamental research.

To achieve this goal, the network consisting of one coordinator and at least three associated partners, together belonging to at least three different Belgian institutions, receives an annual research budget. At least one of the network teams is to belong to a university of the other community. The IUAP program has been extended to foreign partners, who are allowed to participate on a co-financing basis.

Although the composition of the networks still lies with the Federal Public Planning Service -Science Policy, the universities have a strong advisory voice.

The IUAP phase VII of this initiative was launched in 2012 and will end on September 30, 2017.
