Since 2007, Flanders has been funding medium- and large-scale research infrastructure for fundamental and strategic research through the Hercules Foundation.
The Hercules channel defines the notion of infrastructure rather broadly: it comprises all facilities and sources (corpora, databases, biotopes, etc.) that facilitate groundbreaking strategic research in all scientific disciplines.
The resources for medium-scale research infrastructure are distributed among the five Flemish associations according to the Hercules allocation model, while those for large-scale infrastructure are assigned on a competitive basis following an open call.
