Methods in artistic research

In this seminar, Doctor of Arts Adilia Yip invites artistic researchers to discuss their methods. Method is the framework for the activities undertaken during the research, and the steering wheel guiding how to recognise, collect, organise, understand, explain, analyse and evaluate the research data, experience, idea, practice and phenomenon. Method may take the form of experimentation, hypothesis, theorisation and creation, as well as documenting the experiences of entering an unknown territory, or digging deeper into the core of what has been believed and practised for a long time. Method is, therefore, considered the supporter and stimulator of the researcher's intuitive ideas.

As method in artistic research can take shape through a vast array of approaches and structures, it seems that no two artistic research methods are identical. Method is idiosyncratic in nature and its configuration is always up to the researcher. He/she is given the legitimate freedom to design the method that helps to find answers and explore new knowledge. Yet, we are often left with questions and doubts about the sustainability, practicality, effectiveness and feasibility of method. And how do we know this is "the way" that can direct us to the answers to our central research questions?
