Mission

Our mission

Water is life… but this precious resource is seriously challenged by scarcity and pollution. BioWaVE envisions a sustainable water cycle, based on resource recovery and resource-efficient technologies to meet these worldwide challenges.

The research of the BioWaVE group is directed towards the development of biochemical engineering technologies for a sustainable water cycle. Our research is specifically focused on industrial wastewater engineering & wastewater valorization.

Our expertise in a few keywords

  • Industrial wastewater treatment and reuse
  • Energy-efficient technologies: sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and aerobic granular sludge (AGS)
  • Real-time control of activated sludge systems
  • Conventional and innovative biological nutrient removal: bio-P; nitrification/denitrification; nitritation/denitritation; nitrous oxide emissions ...
  • Resource recovery from wastewater and sludge: biopolymers, bioplastics and volatile fatty acids
  • (rapid) Whole effluent ecotoxicity testing (WET)
  • Molecular analysis of wastewater treatment systems
  • Treatment and valorisation of biological wastestreams
  • Optimisation of fermentation processes and downstream processing
  • (Bio)Process control and modelling
