Psychotherapy refers to all competences necessary for the psychological and psychosocial treatment of psychopathology.  It is an essential part of the skills of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and remedial educationalists working in mental health care.

The psychotherapy training programs

The postgraduate psychotherapy training programs aim to produce clinicians who are capable of autonomously practicing psychotherapy with adults, children, youngsters and their context.  The objective is to train professionals capable of removing or lowering  disturbances, inner conflicts or emotional, cognitive and psychosocial difficulties in patients.

The methods, knowledge and approaches presented on the course are based on the past, where valuable theoretical frames of reference were developed into full therapeutic schools (psychoanalytical, behavioural, person-centered and experiential, and systemic).

In addition, the training programs focus on the future integrating methods from different therapeutic schools. This fits closely with the growing movement towards integrative psychotherapy, where the common factors form the basis of psychotherapy. The most recent integrative treatments for specific psychological disturbances are an example of this.

The programs are based on evidence-based knowledge and treatments as much as possible.  The basis of the psychotherapeutic practice is empirical knowledge of the therapeutic process and relationship, of patient- and therapist factors, as well as research about the effectiveness of different treatment methods. Where empirical support is missing, clinical consensus and publication in high level journals or books are used.

Psychotherapy research

Since 2009, CAPRI has developed a specific research line on working mechanisms of psychotherapy. Case-studies and process-outcome studies using a mixed-method methodology are used by the psychotherapy postgraduate trainees and Phd researchers.

For research purposes within the training program, 'The Antwerp Systematic Case Study Research Protocol for Adults' and 'The Antwerp Systematic Case Study Research Protocol for Children and Adolescents' have been developed. Each protocol is a systematic case study data collection design, divided in three major therapy measurement domains: therapy process, therapy outcome, and client characteristics/predictors.

Scientific, social and/or technological relevance of the research

The aim of the Antwerp Systematic Case Study Protocol is to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice in psychotherapy. The research protocol is used by the trainees of the psychotherapy training to study, reflect upon and improve their psychotherapeutic practice? It results in a specialization report, which can lead to publication in a psychotherapy journal. The systematic case study fits into the International Project on the Effectiveness of Psychotherapy and Psychotherapy Training (IPEPPT, Elliott & Zucconi, 2006). The IPEPPT wishes to stimulate practice-oriented research.
