IUAP-network 'City and Society'

The Centre for Urban History is a partner in the IUAP-network 'City and Society in the Low Countries, 1200-1800: space, knowledge, social capital' funded by the Federal Science Policy of Belgium (director: Marc Boone, University of Ghent). The network is established in order to explore topics which reflect current trends in historical research and to evaluate methodological innovation.

Research packages

Three research packages are proposed whose subjects emphasize the socio-cultural and spatial historical approach:

  • (1) urban space
  • (2) knowledge and culture
  • (3) social capital

Elements of these themes have already been the object of study in the previous IAP-project, but they have been placed here in the more pronounced perspective of international comparative research and a resolutely interdisciplinary approach (involving also art historians, book historians and geographers).

Other partners

Other partners are University of Ghent, Free Univesity of Brussels (ULB), Royal Library of Belgium (KBR), Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (MRBAB/KMSKB) and Utrecht University.
