Scientific Research Community

The Centre for Urban History is the core group of the Scientific Research Community (WOG) ‘Urban Agency: Setting the Research Agenda of Urban History’, funded by the Scientific Research Council, Flanders (FWO-Vlaanderen).

Starting from fundamental questions on the urban nature of major societal transformations we focus on major themes in Urban History in order to assess and subsequently deepen its potential as a discipline. The following topics will be intensively explored in both preparatory workshops and full-fledged conferences between 2011 and 2016:

  1. The sovereign city: Levels of governance and the possibilities, opportunities and limits for urban agency
  2. The cosmopolitan city: Religion, culture, the urban space and migration
  3. The civil city: Social cohesion and community building in an urban environment
  4. The creative city: Cultural industries and cultural policy as an answer?
  5. The ecological city: environmental urban history
