On the Design of Hybrid Thermo-Hydronic Production Systems

Heating and domestic hot water usage have a large share in the total energy consumption of the building sector. A crucial requirement in order to reduce this consumption in the (near) future, is to produce the demanded heat sustainable and efficiently. This is possible by using technologies such as cogeneration devices and heat pumps.

To find a balance between ecological and economical profit, these technologies are often combined with other, more conventional technologies like boilers. Designing these so-called ‘hybrid’ production systems is challenging, as the degrees of freedom increase. Indeed, the sizing, the hydronic configuration and the control system becomes more complex.

In this PhD-project, a methodology is being developed to fasten and to improve the design process of such systems.
