Patrick Meire (research group ECOBE) is an expert on aquatic ecosystems. Patricks research focuses on the functional role of rivers, estuaries and wetlands. Aquatic ecosystems deliver multiple ecosystem services (water purification, flooding prevention, spawning area for commercial fish species, carbon sequestration, ...) to society. By ecosystem management based on robust scientific results, ecosystem services can be optimized, at the same time taking into account biodiversity and natural sustainability (www.watertechnology.be). Patricks research couples fundamental scientific knowledge of chemistry, ecology and morphology of ecosystems to a sustainable ecosystem management. The approach focuses strongly on increasing ecosystem resilience to multiple anthropogenic pressures: climate change (and coupled hydrological changes), habitat fragmentation and land use.
