Nature-based solutions

Here we present a link to some of our recent projects and research around nature-based solutions. Research focuses for example on the implementation of large scale nature-restoration projects that provide maximal safety against storm tides in the Schelde estuary, while also maximizing biodiversity and ecosystem services. Next to large restoration projects, we focus also on the development of new techniques that can support natural ecosystems services, e.g. through the development of nature-based carbon sequestration techniques.

Storm tide protection

The Scheldt estuary is protected from severe storm tides through a unique project coupling safety, natural development and ecosystem serices provision: the Sigmaplan. Research at the GCE was essential in design the flooding areas. The largest sluice in the biggest restored area was named after Prof. Patrick Meire of GCE.
