Imports of illicit drugs into Europe are increasing year after year. To assist customs officers in their mission to put an end to this trend, new detection technologies are required. The BorderSens initiative is tackling this issue.
The goal within the consortium is to develop a rapid and simultaneous electrochemical detection and identification method for illicit drugs (including cutting agents and adulterants) and their precursors. The product development team's primary goal is to translate this technique into a user-friendly product that can be utilised by users without the requirement for scientific training. Prototypes will be demonstrated to end-users throughout the whole project at seven demonstration sites at EU borders. This close collaboration will result in a product that will suit the demands of the end users.
