Research mission

Our group combines proteomics, (epi)genomics, transcriptomics (mRNA, microRNA), proteinchemistry and chemical biology technologies to understand molecular biology of sensing, infection and cancer-inflammation.

Following topics will be handled:

  • Intra- and extracellular anti-HIV-1, -HPV and -VSV responses (proteomics, immunochemistry)
  • Biomarkers for viral infections of the female genital tract, such as HPV infection leading to cervix carcinoma and HIV-1 (proteomics, immunochemistry)
  • Hypoxia/oxidative stress  (protein chemistry, transcriptomics, epigenomics).
  • Study of the structure/function of globin based oxygen– and redox-sensors (protein chemistry)
  • Characterize epigenomic targets of medicinal natural compounds, steroid hormones and hypoxia mimetics in models of cancer-inflammation, cardiovascular disease and neuroplasticity (epigenomics, transcriptomics, chemoproteomics)
  • Characterize the role of steroid responsive microRNAs in hormone therapy responses in cancer-inflammation (mirnomics, transcriptomics)
  • Characterize intracellular protein targets of phytochemicals with anticancer properties on a proteome-wide scale (chemoproteomics, transcriptomics)
  • Applying systems biology approaches to integrate epigenomic, transcriptomic, microRNomic, (chemo)proteomic datasets to identify key signalling pathways and molecular targets medicinal phytochemicals.

To study these processes, we have available dedicated apparatuses such as 1. flash-photolyses which enables us to determine the ligandbinding kinetics which is unique in Belgium, 2. A 2D-LC-MS/MS proteomics platform for identification of proteins from complex samples such as cell lysates or body fluids and 3. new chromatin-proteomic approaches and DNA-methylation-detectionmethods (pyrosequencing,  Illumina array, Epityper sequenom assays).
