MS and OC/EC Analysis

  • Mass Spectrometric (MS) Analysis:  is used for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of secondary organic aerosol and ambient aerosol extracts. Two instrumental configurations are employed:
    • Gas chromatography/ion trap mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in the electron ionization mode using prior derivatization and capillary GC columns; and
    • Liquid chromatography/linear ion mass spectrometry (LC/MS) in the electrospray ionization mode using the ion trap capabilities of the linear ion trap.

  • Organic carbon/elemental carbon (OC/EC) analysis: is used to determine the OC/EC content of PM10 or PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter smaller that 10 or 2.5 μm) collected on quartz fibre filters.
