Research framework

The impact of human activities on the aquatic and wetland ecosystems are evaluated with general and generated knowledge from fundamental research on the structure and functioning of these systems. Together with applied ecological research, management measures are worked out for specific habitats and species (nature conservation), as well as for the functioning of larger systems (ecosystem management).
The research mainly focuses on waterco urses and wetlands and aims to contribute to a scientific basis for integrated water management.

Integrated water management is the coordinated and integrated development, management and restoration of the water system until it fulfils the quality objectives for the ecosystem and the present multifunctional use, without compromising that ability for the future generations. The objectives and consideration of landuse and functions have to be based upon a sound knowledge of the functioning of the water system and of its limits determined by natural preconditions.

Based on fundamental research of the functioning of aquatic and wetland ecosystems the impact of human activities on the system are evaluated and based on applied ecological research, management measures for specific habitat and species (nature conservation) as well as for the functioning of larger systems (ecosystem management) are worked out . The research mainly focuses on watercourses and wetlands and aims to contribute to a scientific basis for integrated water management.
