Process support for participatory planning at case study level

Tools to support participatory processes in which ecosystem services play an important role. Various tools can be applied during interviews and/or workshops.

These instruments can be classified into different categories depending on the specific purpose for which they are used:

Category 1: ESD stakeholder analysis

These methods for the preparation of participatory processes include ES stakeholder matrices, Interest-Power matrices (several varieties ), Interest -power analysis, the " Business Model Canvas ", the " Net- maps" (analyzing social networks) and the " Stakeholder maps".

Category 2: Social inventory and valuation of ES

The ESD card game can be used to identify the relative importance of ES according to social preferences. This tool was developed to suit individual interviews (but over time a workshop version can also be considered?).

Category 3: Participatory ESD mapping

Different methods can be applied depending on the concrete needs. Participatory mapping methods can be used to bring together with various stakeholders to local knowledge of specific ES, and/or the local demand for ES in specific image. On the other hand can also depart from within existing ES cards (eg. Existing QuickScan cards) as a starting point for a workshop.

Category 4: Analysis of ES win-win and trade-offs

Communication tool for structuring discussions about ES win-win and trade-offs.

Category 5: Participatory scenario development and MCDA

Methodology to develop participatory scenarios based on desired land use and/or services, and evaluation through Multi-Criteria Decision-Analysis (MCDA).

Category 6: General ESD communication and ESD mainstreaming

Depending question of the study sites, some ES tools focused on communication and awareness regarding ES (incl. easily accessible activities for the general public) may be developed. These instruments are often more general in scope. They can be used at different times through a (participatory) process.
