Cell therapy is every form of treatment in which human cells are used to cure or support the patient. Bone marrow transplantation, a leukemia treatment where the patient receives bone marrow cells, is the most famous form of cell therapy. Many different forms are still in an experimental phase. The Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) has a leading role in the exploration of new approaches for cell therapy. At the end of 2005 the Center for Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine (CCRG) was founded, a multidisciplinary platform in which innovative therapies are being investigated. Several departments are involved in the platform, such as Hematology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Nephrology and Oncology. CCRG is performing investigator-driven clinical studies in which dendritic cell vaccines or limbal epithelial cells are under investigation.
