Library

The Institute houses a collection of both widely accessible and specialized source material, primary and secondary literature. This library can be consulted free of charge by researchers, students and occasional visitors. For the exact conditions, please contact the Institute.

You will find an inventory of the available works as a PDF download on this page. The entire catalogue is progressively incorporated into the inventory and the search program of the central university library of the UA, to facilitate research work.

In 2013 the Institute received the Walter Benjamin collection of Prof. Pieter Jan Gijsberts (1952-2011), a great admirer and collector of books by and about Walter Benjamin. The donation includes some 100 titles. The books were donated by Ineke van der Burg. In 2017 the donation was extended with a large collection of books by and about Paul Celan. In the year 2008 the Institute of Jewish Studies was granted the private library of the late Joseph De Dobbeleer from Hoeilaart. The collection (about 1500 works) contains mainly works on Jewish history (the state of Israel, World War II, anti-Semitism, etc.) and literary works written by Jewish authors (I.B. Singer, Vassili Grossman, Amos Oz, Primo Levi, and others). In addition, the library includes works on Jewish mysticism and Bible study. Most of the books are in Dutch or French. A limited number of old books in Hebrew is also part of the collection.

The Institute is also grateful to house in its information and documentation center the library of the late Professor dr. em. Jean-Paul Bier, former professor of German literature at the University of Antwerp.

The titles of the available Yiddish works are progressively transcribed, and thus included in the overall search program and inventory of the University of Antwerp.
