Financial Law Seminar

The Financial Law Seminar is a students’ association consisting of all former and current students of the Profound Financial Law Course, a course instructed in the Master of Laws at the University of Antwerp. The Profound Financial Law Course is currently lectured by Prof. dr. Robby Houben. It was first lectured by Prof. dr. Herman Braeckmans, who founded the Financial Law Seminar more than 30 years ago.

The Seminar holds a meeting twice a year, one in July and one in December. All the current and former students of the Profound Financial Law Course are invited. At every meeting there are two distinguished speakers. Following each meeting a reception is held where former students can informally socialize and current students can come into contact with former students.

The Financial Law Seminar does not have its own means at its disposal. It is completely dependent on the dedication of Prof.dr. Robby Houben, Prof.dr. Herman Braeckmans, Alexander Snyers, the former students and a varying host institution. Being a host institution implies the sponsoring of a meeting (i.e. providing infrastructure and catering for the reception), and is always undertaken by a renowned law firm, Belgian bank or audit firm.

The seminar has existed for more than 30 years. On the occasion of its 30th anniversary in 2017 and to celebrate the retirement of its founder and driving force, a book was published (RENIERS, K., GOOSENS, N. en PEETERS, J. (eds.), Actuele problemen van financieel, vennootschaps- en fiscaal recht. 30 jaar Werkgroep financieel recht, Antwerpen-Oxford, Intersentia, 2017, 230p.). The same happened at the occasion of its 20th anniversary in 2007 (HOUBEN, R. en RUTTEN, S. (eds.), Actuele problemen van financieel, vennootschaps- en fiscaal recht. Feestbundel twintig jaar Werkgroep financieel recht, Antwerpen-Oxford, Intersentia, 2007, 460p.).
