Rut Van Caudenberg is a joint PhD candidate at the Centre for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS), University of Antwerp, and the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. In her doctoral research she studies urban youths’ lived experiences of schooling and education in Flanders and Catalonia, focusing particularly on young people with a migration background. As a researcher, she is also involved in the Horizon2020 project PERCEPTIONS that studies the narratives, imaginations and (mis-) perceptions of the EU held by current and potential migrants, and the way these are distributed via various channels. Previously, she worked on several other (inter)national research projects, including a large scale FP7 European research project on early school leaving (, the evaluation study of the project CURANT (Cohousing and case management for unaccompanied young adult refugees in Antwerp), and the ESF project Reducing Youth Unemployment in Cities with Dual Learning. She also worked on issues such as the integration of vulnerable migrant groups and the engagement of diaspora organisations in development cooperation. She has a Masters Degree in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology (2005, Leiden University) and International Relations and Diplomacy (2006, University of Antwerp), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Research (2014, Goldsmiths-University of London). Before joining CeMIS in 2014, she worked in the NGO-sector and with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on issues of migration, voluntary return and reintegration, population and development, and minority and indigenous rights, mostly in Belgium and Bolivia.
