Sander graduated as a Master in Bioscience Engineering: Cell and Gene technology, with a minor in bio-informatics, at the KU Leuven in 2014. Currently he is a 3th year PhD Student holding an IWT fellowship (SB). He works in 2 different complementary research groups. On one side he is member of the Lab of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, part of the ENdEMIC group, under supervision of Prof. dr. ir. Sarah Lebeer. Secondly, he is part of the Research Group of Industrial Microbiology and Food Biotechnology (IMDO) under supervision of Prof. dr. ir. Luc De Vuyst at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Apart from that, Sander also collaborates with the Laboratory for Process Microbial Ecology and Bioinspirational Management (PME&BIM) at the KU Leuven, under supervision of Prof. dr. ir. Bart Lievens.
Sander's research focusses on the process of vegetable fermentation. Using classical microbiology and the latest state of the art DNA-techniques he investigates the microbial communities in these samples. His interest in bio-informatics and statistics is a plus in this domain of research.
