Introduction

I started my PhD in January 2016 at the research group SPHERE.  I am doing research on metals in the aquatic environment and their effect on the general wellbeing of fish. During my first year I mainly focussed on the three metals copper, cadmium and zinc, which are still found the Flemish surface waters, exceeding the environmental quality standards. My experiments mainly focussed on the acute toxic effects of these pollutants on common carp (Cyprinus carpio).  Since January 2017, I am working on another project , investigating the adaptation of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to historical mercury pollution. We are currently identifying three-spined stickleback populations which live in both pristine- and polluted rivers. We are measuring the degree of pollution in water, sediment and biota samples and will conduct a genome wide association study (GWAS) to determine how populations of this fish species did adapt to a polluted environment.

Besides the extensive field study we also do lab experiments. Crosses are being made between males and females of different populations (from polluted and pristine sites) (KU Leuven). The resulting F1 and F2 families are then used in exposure experiments. We will measure both physiological endpoints and molecular biomarkes to determine the specific effect of mercury contaminated food on the different families.
