Imagining Europe from the outside. On the role of democracy and human rights perceptions in constructing migration aspirations and decision towards Europe (EUMAGINE). 01/02/2010 - 31/01/2013

Abstract

By means of a non-Eurocentric, theoretically and empirically sound cross-country and cross-region research design, EUMAGINE studies the impact of perceptions of human rights and democracy on international migration aspirations and decisions. Special attention goes to human rights (including women's rights) and democracy perceptions on Europe, specific European countries, and the relative popularity of Europe in comparison and competition with the US, Russia, Canada and Australia. The core idea of the project is that macro and meso level discourses on human rights and democracy influence micro level perceptions on these themes in countries of origin and transit, which in turn influence migratory aspirations and decisions.

Abstract

This project proposal is driven by seven central aims. (1) to give an overview of the educational situation of migrant youth in Flanders, especially in Antwerp, Ghent and Genk; (2) to give an overview of the school career of all pupils of the second grade of secondary education in the selected cities (Antwerp, Ghent and Genk); (3) to study the impact of the individual socio-psychological factors on the school career; (4) to study the impact of the proximal processes in the family, the school, the peer groups and the neighbourhood on the school career; (5) to study the impact of the distant processes in the broader socio-cultural, political and economic context on the school career; (6) to contribute to the development of a better informed and balanced educational policy; (7) to contribute to local capacity building in the concerned schools and organisations.

Abstract

This project studies the influence of religiosity on specific preferences of key importance in economic behaviour. The hypothesis that religiosity has a significant influence on time preference, social preferences and the preferences for work are tested using survey data and experimental data. More specifically, the focus is on possible differences in effects of religiosity in societies with a Christian and Islamic background.

Structural underemployment and job shortage : the paradox of Rhineland labour markets. 01/10/2004 - 31/12/2005

Abstract

The aim of the project is to document, explain and simulate the Rhineland labour market paradox. A key feature of the Rhineland model is the existence of a dual labour market. On the one hand there is an official labour market dominated by collective bargaining between social partners and with 'good' but rationed jobs. On the other hand a sizeable shadow economy flourishes. The paradox lies in the coexistence of structural underemployment in the official economy with job shortage in the underground economy.

Universities and firms: a comparative analysis of the interaction between market processes, organizational strategies and governance. Satellite UA: regulation and management of universities. 01/01/2002 - 31/12/2006

Abstract

The goal of the project is to explore new developments in the theory of organizations and of regulation, and to apply them to the specific case of universities. While the project has a strong microeconomic theory component, it also relies on general management, human resource management and organizational sociology perspectives. The focus is twofold: (1) the government is primarily interested in the use, the design and the effects of various funding formulas and regulatory mechanisms; (2) the university itself has also to design its own policy.

Determinants and consequences of migration with special attention or the relation betwaaen illegal migration and organised crime 01/01/2001 - 31/12/2004

Abstract

Migration raises several important social issues. Does worldwide liberalisation of international trade lead to decreasing migratry pressure? What effects has the economic integration of Central and Eastern Europe into the EU on East-West migration? Does migration lead to diminishing employment opportunities or wages for locals? What are the benefits of migration and for whom? How can the social choice for a stop in the migration be explained? What are the costs and benefits of such a policy? How can integration of immigrants be encouraged in a cost-effective way? In this research project a number of questions will be adressed. The goal of the project is to deepen the knowledge of the determinants and the consequences of migration and to strenghen policy making views. The cetral theme of the project is the study of the causes and cosequences of migration in general, but more specifically thedevelopment of a paradigm on the relation betwaan illegal migration and organised crime

      Abstract

The project aims at analysing economic consequences of compensation arrangements between hospitals and physicians. Specifically, the focus is on the relation between hospital performance and compensation schemes such as fee-for-service, fee-splitting, pooling, salary, etc. This research is a specific application (with empirical evidence) of principal-agent and contract theory in the medical care industry.

Financing primary and secondary education: alternative formula's. 01/09/1995 - 31/08/1997

              Abstract

Flemish primary and secondary schools are allowed to employ teachers based on the number of pupils and conform current regulations on teacher/pupil ratios. These teachers are paid directly by the (Flemish) government. Schools also receive a subsidy to cover other expenditures. Alternatively, a school could be financed by a global budget covering personnel as well as other expenditures. This project aims at designing precise resource allocation formulas for such budget.

From secondary to higher education: problem survey (Flanders). 01/02/1995 - 31/03/1995

                Abstract

This study surveys problems of transition from secondary to higher education (Flanders). Transition problems are related to massification of higher education, changing views on the role of higher education, cost-benefit considerations and social participation. The importance of higher education drop-outs is evaluated and possible causes are discussed. The present system of open access is compared with more selective systems in other countries. Various selection systems are discussed and criteria for evaluation reviewed. Finally, points of view from different policy makers are reported.

Economic growth: the importance of technological change, human capital and governments'policy 01/10/1994 - 30/09/1998

                  Abstract

This growth-project started off with a review of the literature. In a second stage some theoretical models have been empirically tested. Especially the question wether at the accumulation of human capital and technological know-how are growth improving -as suggested by the so called 'new' growth theory- was central in this part. Moreover it has been investigated wether public and private investment have a different impact on economic performance. The relation between income inequality, economic growth and labor market policies is the issue of part three of the project.

                    Abstract

The project compares economic efficiency and equity consequences of a system of open access to higher education with a system with test-based admission. Admission policies in neighbouring countries are compared. Both systems (open access vs. test-based access) are analysed using cost-benefit analysis. Predictive validity of an experimental test is estimated for a sample of first year undergraduates.

                      Abstract

Recently, new models of economic growth were developed, known as 'New Growth Theory'. These models emphasize the links between growth, technological innovation, increasing returns, human capital and international trade. The purpose of this project is to further explore the properties of these models by means of numerical simulation methods and to test these models econometrically for a selection of countries.
