Learning outcomes

1. The participant has insight in the complex relations between Muslims and Christians throughout the premodern and modern period and has a theoretical as well as a more practical framework to analyse the interactions between both worlds.

2. The participant acquires deeper insight into the politics and society of the Middle-East and the role of the Islam. The participant can critically analyse the media, explain the economic interests in political relations and frame the role of identity and nationalism in the Islamic world.

MC students are evaluated in the same way as undergraduate history students:

The premodern Islamic World: 600-1600:

  • written examination without oral explanation
  • Continuous evaluation
  • Written assignment and presentation

The modern Islamic World: 1600-Today:

  • Written assignment
  • Take home exam
