At the University of Antwerp we ensure the quality of our programmes. Every programme goes through a quality assurance cycle of six years.
In year three we review the quality assurance of the programme during the internal process monitoring and control. In spring 2021 this will be done for the advanced master in maritime and air transport management.
Year six concludes the cycle with a peer review. The study programme reflects on itself and has a discussions with internal and external experts and with an independent student. In spring 2022 the peer review team will visit the advanced master in maritime and air transport management.
The programme is characterized by the following strengths according to the visitation report of 2016 and the visitation report with limited procedure in 2019, the follow-up plan after the visitation and on the basis of internal process monitoring and control. The programme is further strengthened by working on the following points:
Overall students and alumni appreciate the profile of the programme which combines academic specialization with a practice-oriented approach and site visits to relevant institutions and companies in de Port of Antwerp and abroad. The programme consists of clear tracks which prepare students for careers in industry or for further study. Most of the staff are recognized researchers in their field. Experts from the industry are involved in the programme through guest lectures. The content-related coherence within each course and the assessment methods used are well monitored. The employability rate of alumni is high.
In follow-up of the visitation in 2016 the programme and its examinations were brought to advanced master level and more focused on maritime and air transport management. Crash courses in economics and financial economics at the beginning of the academic year bring all students to the same level. Also a number of improvements were made to the master’s dissertation.
The reassessment panel in 2019 was impressed by all these positive changes and concluded that all the recommendations of the first visitation committee have been addressed.
The reassessment panel still suggested to improve the development of communication skills and the attention paid to cross-cutting themes such as sustainability or digitalization. The level of the air transport management track can also be scaled up and the timing of the master’s dissertations should be revised. Finally the panel supports the programme to establish an official, faculty supported alumni organization.
