About the lecture

(How) Do school inspection and school evaluation lead to educational improvement? In this lecture existing research on the role of inspection and evaluation in promoting school improvement and ensuring accountability in educational systems is presented. The relationship between external evaluation and institutional self-evaluation is explored and promising ways to combine both to drive educational improvement are illustrated.

About the speaker

Melanie Ehren is a Reader in Educational Accountability and Improvement at the University College of London Institute of Education and head of the Centre for Educational Evaluation and Accountability (www.educationalevaluation.net). Her academic work focuses on the effectiveness of accountability and evaluation systems and aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the interplay between accountability and the broader education system in tackling inequality and improving student outcomes.
