Annebeth Bels graduated as a master in communication research at the University of Antwerp in 2011. Her master's thesis was an analysis of how postmodern elements in Lady Gaga's performances, as perceived by different audiences, bridge the gap between high and low culture . After working as a social media manager, she returned to academia to collaborate on a government funded research project on media representation of teen parents in Flanders. Currently, she is working on her FWO funded PhD focusing on preteens, sexualization and media use. The project entails media use surveys, content analyses of the most popular media among preteens, an etnography of sexualization and sexualized media in the daily interactions of preteens, and participant produced visual data.
