Michiel Bastiaensen investigates new biomarkers of exposure in the Flemish Environment and Health biomonitoring program.
The FLEHS program aims to improve environmental health and wellbeing by quantifying the effects of environmental determinants on public health with special emphasis on vulnerable populations. The new cycle (2016-2020) will address upcoming challenges regarding eco-behavior and the indoor environment. New and emerging chemicals, often substitutes for toxic persistent chemicals, will be identified and investigated in human biological matrices of adolescents.
The current project is closely related to the new European human biomonitoring initiative, that aims to expand research related to human exposure to chemicals in Europe.
